This is one of Gary Vaynerchuk’s ethos for building a personal brand online.
Most people are crippled by the thought of creating original content. They’re paralyzed by the idea of filming something nobody will watch, or writing something that nobody will read.
They get stuck in the quagmire of thinking, debating, and strategizing possibilities. Meanwhile, nothing gets done.
The world is changing too fast to do nothing. Hesitate and the opportunity vanishes.
But creating content doesn’t need to be that difficult. You and your life are the unique piece of creative. There’s a large enough audience on the internet that somebody will find what you do interesting enough to pay attention. All you need to do is document your journey.
Document your journey from college intern to full time employee. Share the solution to the problem you solved last week. Build something in public and share your progress. Broadcast your breakthroughs as well as your failures. Especially your failures.
Document your journey of becoming.
Your circumstances are not unique. But your perspective is. There’s a non-zero chance that somebody else is going through the same situation and would benefit from hearing what you have to say.
Don’t give advice. Tell your story.
This isn’t to say you’re meant to be a social media celebrity. Not everyone enjoys talking to a camera and sharing every intimate moment of their life online.
That’s fine. You don’t have to be that person.
But the world is changing. Worldwide connectivity means that posting ideas on the internet today provides enormous leverage for creating value. Whatever your goals or career aspirations, it would be foolish not to tap into this community and contribute something meaningful to the conversation.
To close with the words of Gary Vee:
“If you’re pumping out good shit, people will follow… There’s no excuse for not talking to the world. It just doesn’t need to be your thoughts and words every time.”
